Schedule and routines

The schedule refers to the sequence of events that occur regularly in a classroom. For example, a schedule for a preschool classroom might include the following:

      • Arrival
      • Breakfast
      • Circle time
      • Centers
      • Playground
      • Lunch
      • Music and movement
      • Rest time
      • Centers
      • Circle time
      • Departure

Routines refer to a shorter sequence of events within that larger schedule. Each component of the schedule has its own routine. For example, the arrival routine might include a child’s putting his or her backpack in the cubby, checking in, and playing with table toys. Visuals should be used to support children in understanding and following the schedule and routines.
