The discipline gap is the trend demonstrating that program/school staff discipline children of some groups more often and/or more harshly than other groups for the same types of behaviors. Black children are punished more often and more harshly for the same behaviors than other children and are more likely than other children to be punished for subjective offenses, such as “having a bad attitude.” In American schools, Black boys are suspended and expelled more often than children of any other racial or ethnic group.[1]
